And boy is he getting FUN!

For starters, he’s decided that now is time for solid food. He did this by grabbing a celery stick off of the table on Saturday and chowing down. He’s all “Screw purees. I have teeth now, and I’m gonna murder this celery.” And he did. We tried chicken at Mike’s mom’s yesterday. He is.. not a fan. I think I am going to start with some nice rice cereal this week.

He can sit unassisted for minutes at a time. I still sit behind him as he hasn’t figured out what to do if he face plants on the floor. He just kind of lays there and screams until I fix it. It’s pretty stupid.

He really has a lot to say and chats me up all day. Nothing really intelligible (except one morning, it totally sounded like he said “Hello”. Probably coincidence.

His latest trick though, is singing. I managed to catch him on video (he tends to get a little camera shy). Excuse me singing the dorky song I made up for him in the beginning – he likes it if we take turns singing.

Dudes, I am being KILLER on phones today. I am pretty sure the next person who text messages me is probably going to hit send and have their phone spontaneously combust. I really love the neighborhood we live in – it’s full of fun little restaurants and young families and community services for families, and it just pretty much ideal for a young family. I also don’t mind that it borders the downtown east side, generally, as it keeps things interesting. The one down side though is that if it isn’t nailed down, it’s probably stolen and pawned for drug/beer money. Yesterday, I took baby Derek down to the Stone Soup Festival.

He looked around while we strolled, then passed out in the stroller. If he were a bigger boy, there were lots of activity tables for kids, but he’s still just a baby, so we spent most of our time at the library table making buttons out of old graphic novels and chatting up the library lady who runs our weekly storytime. Anyway, I picked up a birthday card for my dad at one of the booths, then went to nearby Grandview Park to write it out. Went up to the post office to mail it all off, and then made the stomach-churning discovery that I’d left my cell phone on the table at Grandview Park. Jogged back and confirmed what logic already told me.. GONE!

Raced home and logged on to iCloud. My phone had already made it all the way down to Hastings, which pretty much means phone death. Sent it a desperate message:

$100 if you bring this phone to <<nearest crossstreets to my house>>. No questions asked.

Then crossed my fingers and refreshed a whole bunch. Success! Watched my phone make its way back towards us. Mike met the guy at the intersection with $100, and I have my phone back! I have to say, I didn’t really like the circumstances, but seeing the technology in action was pretty cool.

And then to start off this lovely Sunday morning, I sent Mike’s phone for a ride in the washing machine. Yeah, I know. I’m pretty much the worst. It’s in a bag of rice right now, but we’re not hopeful.

Let’s see, what else has happened this week.

Aidan and I took a walk around Steveston on Thursday. Steveston has been transformed into Storybrooke for the TV Series of the same name. Looked around, did not see any famous people. Maybe next time.

Babies were mostly pretty chill, until Derek got all overtired and decided that stroller screaming was cool. (Note: It isn’t). Waiting until we got off of the main path, then started singing the stupid Barney raindrop song to him. Lovely Aidan joined in instead of pretending she didn’t know me, which was nice. Soon after, we had two sleeping babies.

Friday I went back down to Richmond and did a free strollercize class with Aidan. My thighs hurt most of Saturday. The Mommy & Me fitness lady is evil. Nuff said.

Yesterday, we did another big BBQ. Another gorgeous day – spent most of the afternoon hanging out in the backyard while the boys played on Mike’s new pet project (MAME arcade machine) Moved inside when it got dark and played some Cranium. Most of the people left soon after to go watch an Archspire show.

Claire, Kristen, and I got stupid on Facetime.

Then all the smart people (everyone except Claire and me, basically) started a big stupid discussion about economics. Claire and I countered their intelligence by stealing baby Derek’s fancy educational wooden farm set and playing Drunken Idiot Farm.

Basically it was a lot of wooden animals having relations and bashing into each other angrily, and then this sort of thing.

Then everyone went home and we went to bed. Being a grown up is very grown up, friends!

Today we took turns sleeping and doing baby duty since it was a late night, then we had a delicious Mother’s Day pizza. We’re off to see Mike’s mom for dinner in a bit, and that’s pretty much our weekend!

Happy Mother’s Day!

I really am sucking at this whole blogging business, so I will try to make up for it with an epically long recap of my week.

Monday – was supposed to go swimming, but wanted to give my hair an extra day before I washed it, so I hung out at home with the baby. I know, right?

Tuesday -gym, then picked Mike’s mom up at the airport. Yay, I have my babysitter back!

Wednesday – home day again

Thursday – work up with a shitty cold. Canceled plans with Aidan to walk around Steveston. (THIS NEEDS TO HAPPEN SOON). Hung out at home for most of the day, then went to the airport again to pick up my mommy! Yay! I love it when my mom comes because she cooks me nice food. I am easily bought. With food. We do the dinner thing with Mike, and then spontaneously decide to see Titanic 3D. At 8:45 at night. It’s 3 hours long and playing at Metrotown, which is about a 20 minute drive away. SMART DECISIONS RUN IN MY FAMILY!

We really enjoyed it. Mom had never seen a 3D movie before, and we’re both huge dorky saps who have loved Titanic since it originally came out, so it was a good time. Of course, “enjoying” things for me and my mom means a fair bit of being judgey and snarky.

Basically, our conclusion is that Rose is a huge bitch. I mean, aside from the photos that have been making the rounds showing how two people could have fit on the door (which, dude, I said that walking out of the theatre when I was 14. They should have tried more than once.) Rose could have stayed on the lifeboat so that he could concentrate on saving his own skin. She could have tried to help find another floating piece of debris. She could have helped him find a lifejacket. (Mom: Yeah.. why couldn’t they just give Jack a lifejacket? Me: He’s too poor)

But I mean, that’s the obvious Rose is a bitch answer. I think her biggest bit of bitchiness was HOLDING ONTO A NECKLACE WORTH MILLIONS OF DOLLARS WHILE HER FAMILY WORKED HARD AND SHE WAS BEING CARED FOR BY HER GRANDDAUGHTER AND THEN THROWING IT INTO THE FUCKING OCEAN. Seriously, if I was Rose’s husband, granddaughter, or anyone else in her family, I’d be PISSED. I mean, her husband is all working hard for his entire life to provide and she’s just sitting on that shit? That is a life-changing amount of money. And then her nice granddaughter takes her in and takes care of her in her old age instead of shoving her into some awful 60 minutes nursing home and instead of leaving her the necklace as inheritance, she throws it into the ocean? What a crazy old bitch!

I’ll leave it at that, but suffice to say, we are not Rose fans.

Friday morning we took turns having naps and caring for the baby because we got home at 1am and babies don’t care about sleep deprivation and are all “HEY IT IS 6AM TIME TO GREET THE DAY!” Then we met Tim and his coworker for lunch at the reef and spent the afternoon walking around Commercial Drive. Dinner, and then a lovely session of Dance Moms, which is our new favorite terrible reality show (although Toddlers and Tiaras will always hold a special place in our hearts). Dance Moms snark (Why don’t they just let those poor kids play? Why do they have to do a ballet audition AND a competition in one weekend? What is the purpose of the pyramid other than to make them feel shitty about themselves? JUDGMENTAL MINDS NEED TO KNOW!)

Saturday morning we got up and headed over to Fisherman’s Wharf for the Spot Prawn Festival.

We got there early and watched them set up.

Long wait in line for the health inspector to come give them the OK for everything.

Super yummy! We enjoyed prawns.

Derek napped. Prawns are boring when you’re on an all-milk diet.

Then we walked over to Granville Island and did a bit of shopping, mostly foodie presents for my dad. Also looked for a new sleep sack for Derek because he is outgrowing the lovely Harrods one I bought for him when I was first pregnant and wanted desperately to buy SOMETHING BABY. Sad. He’s not supposed to grow up, guys. He’s supposed to be my little tiny baby for FOREVER!!

Derek woke up and was HAPPY! HAPPY HAPPY! PEOPLE TO WATCH! HAPPY!

Then we walked back over to Fisherman’s Wharf and chatted with Pony and Tyler and Leslie for a few minutes, then headed home to set up for BBQ FUN! It was originally supposed to be just a family thing, but then my aunt got a cold and had to cancel, so we decided to invite Tyler and Leslie as well and make it a UFC party since Mike and his mom both like UFC. Derek enjoyed the attention. TWO GRANDMAS AND A MOMMY AND A DADDY AND AN AUNTIE LESLIE AND AN UNCLE TYLER TO PAY ATTENTION TO HIM! SUCH FUN!

SO much fun that he refused to go to bed until almost 9 (bedtime is usually 7), and even then to get him down I had to cuddle him on the bed and pretend to be asleep. Babies are dumb, y’all.

Soose went home, and my mom decided to crash early, so we had a Bros vs Hos Cranium rematch. Happy to report the Hos remain undefeated. Went to bed laaate, then got up early to take mom to the airport, which I hate saying goodbye, but at least we’re all in agreement to just stop in the drop off zone, do a quick hug, and then drive away. Much better than a protracted goodbye. We’ve spent the rest of our day doing household chores and getting ready for the week because we are ADULTS and adults TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS. Basically all this means is that Mike took down the icky broken blinds in the living room and hung up nice new ones, and I’ve done laundry and gotten my schedule and meal plans laid out for the week. Being a grown up is actually kind of boring…

This morning I woke up to the sound of a baby bashing on a crib toy. It’s one of those totally not recommended toys that hangs on the side and has lights and plays music. Basically, I use it to entertain Derek when I’m putting away laundry in his room. He’s all “BASH BASH! MUSIC AND LIGHTS HURRAY!” and I’m all “WHY ARE YOUR SOCKS SO SMALL AND HARD TO MATCH?” Only I turn it off at night so he was bashing it in the morning and being all “WTF! Y U NO WORK TOY?” Because he’s like a real little person who likes to do stuff and who gets bored sometimes now. It’s kind of weird. For the longest time, his reasons for crying were HUNGRY and WET and TIRED but now we have added BORED and WHERE ARE YOU and FRUSTRATED to the mix so it’s not as easy to fix his problems all the time.

Anyway, so he bashed his toy for a while and then started babbling. I don’t know how I got so effing lucky, but he is seriously the chillest baby in the world. Even though he’s hardcore teething – so much so that we’re seeing spots of blood on his bibs – he’s still all “Hey mom. I’m awake. Let’s hang out! I wanna watch you make toast now, k?” So we hung out for a while and then Mike got up and then we hung out a little bit more and then I went and got about 7 inches of hair cut off.

I have been feeling kind of… blah lately and it was time to perk up my look and feel pretty again. So here we are! Wavy bob with subtle pink highlights in it.

And then I got home and people were over and we BBQ’d food and hung out, and played frisbee and then Cranium and ate food and drank entirely too many alcoholic beverages. This Sunday BBQ thing is way too much fun. I hope we’re able to continue it for a while and then maybe transition to Sunday Dinners and games once the weather gets cold. Kind of love it.

I was looking at board games at Richmond Mall with Aidan last week and saw one I think I will pick up next time I’m looking. It’s called Who What Where. Basically, you draw three cards (a person, an action, a place), then draw the combo and try to get your teammates to guess it. We like creative sorts of games like that, so I think it would be a lot of fun. Does anyone else have any recommendations on fun party games?

Had a pretty quiet end of the week. Thursday I went downtown and met Kelsea for lunch. Delicious Thai food, good conversation. I like that girl.

Friday, I got up and drove out to Richmond to pick up a Beaba babyfood maker. Yes, I know I have all of the stuff this thing does in separate pieces in my kitchen, but I love the start it and forget it stuff this is capable of. Plus it’s fun to buy baby things. Kind of wish I’d texted Aidan for a lunch date, but I had tentative plans for the afternoon that later fell through, so I didn’t want to be late for that. I did manage to get our back storage room organized, which has been on my to do list for a while, so it was a nice productive day.

Today we decided to take Derek for his first trip to the U.S.A., which is the fourth country Derek has been in (Canada, England, & Wales are the other ones). Dave and Claire came along for the ride. Mostly it was a chill day spent shopping and eating food we can’t get in Canada (Jack in the Box breakfast sandwich – super gross, only managed 2 or 3 bites. Hot Cheetos – yummy!).

Derek did a lot of this:

Sorry, American friends. I guess your country just isn’t very interesting.

He was so good though. We needed to go for a financial errand, but Derek started working on his front bottom teeth in earnest on Friday, so I was really expecting a pretty rough day, but he was an absolute angel. He usually is. I don’t know how I got so luck. He only really cries when he’s overtired and doesn’t want to sleep, but other than that he’s just the happiest little guy. I am so lucky to have him as a son. <3

I wasn’t going to do the whole birth story thing, but the farther I get from that day, the more I want to remember it, so I’ve decided to blog about the day I became a mommy. If you’re not into the whole birth story thing, go away now because this is gonna be pretty boring for you.

I was super pregnant – 6 days past my due date, and pretty ready to be done being pregnant. I was having a lot of fun making strangers gasp in horror by telling them “last week” when they asked when I was due, but the rest of it was pretty shit. We didn’t really tell anyone this as we wanted to keep the birth pretty private until he was out, but I was actually scheduled for an induction on Saturday, December 10. My parents had flown out before Derek was born to be here for the big event, and they had been basically spoiling me rotten by making my favorite foods.

On December 8, my requested lunch was a smoked salmon sandwich. My dad fishes recreationally and smokes his own meat at home, and he’d brought some of the salmon down to share. We’d also gone to Safeway and up and down Commercial Drive for various ingredients (not just for the sandwich – for butter tarts and borscht and other things my pregnant belly wanted as well). Anyway, I was super looking forward to this sandwich, so of course my water broke the minute I stood up to go get the sandwich. It wasn’t the movie-style gush of water, just a steady trickle, so I decided to ignore this event until after I finished my sandwich.

The sandwich was delicious, for the record.

Post-sandwich, I went into my bedroom and change my pants and put on a pad, as per the “what to do if” instructions my doctor had given me in the weeks prior. I called Mike’s cell. No answer. I called again. Still no answer. This was weird because he was obviously on HIGH ALERT and had not failed to answer a text or call from me within seconds in the month prior. So I called the main switchboard at his office. He was “not at his desk right now, would I like to leave a message”. Not particularly, friendly receptionist. I explained the situation, and they had him paged. He never takes calls at work and managed to hang up on me. I called back. He answers this time. Turns out his phone was on his desk, but had crashed (take that, android lovers). He gets on his bike and heads home.

I call the on-call number for my doctor. Explain that my water has broken, but there are no contractions. Just a heads up that we’ll likely be in later. The doctor is genuinely excited to hear from me, and wishes me well until we meet later.

Mike comes home. We start leisurely packing the rest of our hospital bags. Let my parents know the plan. They head outside for a smoke.

I feel another gush of fluid and check the pad. Oh shit, now it’s green. For those not in the know about birth and all that jazz, the green is meconium, which is a fancy word for baby poop. This means the baby has pooped inside me. It can be because he is in distress, or it can also just be that his bowels are mature. What it means for my labor is that it will need to happen in the hospital so he can be monitored.

We call the doctor and let her know what’s up. “You should come in now”. We quickly finish packing and update my parents again. Hugs and kisses goodbye, and we’re in the van for our final drive together as a childless couple.

We arrive at the hospital and are speedily admitted. Unfortunately, all of the labour rooms are in use, so we hang out in the triage area with a fetal heart rate monitor and a contraction monitor. The good news is that he does not appear to be in distress. The bad news is that I still haven’t had any contractions, and I’m only 2cm dilated, so the doctor recommends induction.

I love my doctors office. In every stage of the way, they explained what was happening and why they were recommending what they were recommending. I felt completely in control of the decisions and interventions throughout. I am pretty sure I was supposed to walk in with a big birth plan, but all I really cared about is that I didn’t get morphine, since it makes me trip out. Beyond that, I wanted to try things as naturally as possible, but I was open to pain relief and interventions as needed.

While I’m still in triage, a nurse comes and starts my IV. I burst into tears. Fear and anticipation and pain and I don’t know what. It was the lowest point in the whole birth, to be honest, and even that wasn’t that bad. I wipe my eyes and Mike and I have a snack and excitedly talk about how we’re going to be parents very soon.

Around 9pm, a room is finally available, and we head down there. I have my own nurse, since I’m being induced. Her name is Michaela, and she looks like Kirsten Dunst, but with better teeth. She is also super nice and friendly. I like Michaela. She manages to track down a cordless fetal heart rate monitor and contraction monitor so that I can be as mobile as I please.

The oxytocin is started. Mike and I chat, and we all wait for things to happen. Finally around midnight, I start feeling the contractions. For a while, they’re manageable. I got through them by pretending to run. As they grew, I pretended I was running uphill. As the ebbed, I pretended I was running downhill.

After a few hours, they’re just coming too fast and too hard. I ask for an epidural, thinking it might be a bit of a wait.

Hells no, son. This is BC Womens Hospital and they have 2 anesthesiologists on site around the clock. The magic unicorn epidural man comes, and I hold very still while he places the epidural. The pain goes pretty quickly, and I’m pretty much willing to leave Mike for this magic magic man who makes the pain go away. He is likely the most popular person at the hospital. He gives me a walking epidural, so I can still move a bit and feel a bit. I am also able to give myself extra epidural by pressing a button, and reduce it by letting it wear off and not topping it up. Brilliant.

Pain free, I relax in bed and Mike and I doze for a few hours. We think we’re tired, sweet naive fools that we are. We do not know tired at this point. A week from this day, we’ll know tired, but we don’t know it yet.

I wake up and chat to Michaela for a bit. She says she doesn’t think she’ll get to see our baby today, but she’ll pop up to my room the next day to meet him. I mention that I feel a bit nauseous. She talks to the doctor and we get something for it. I actually feel pretty good at this point.

Around 4:30 am, the doctor comes in to see how I’m doing. She asks if I want a cervical exam. Yes, yes please I do. I am crossing my fingers at this point, hoping for at least a 5 or 6.

We are all shocked and delighted to learn that I am 9cm with a lip. On reflection, I realize that the nausea I was feeling prior was likely due to transition, but I don’t realize this until much later, so being as dilated as I am is a lovely surprise. The doctor recommends laying on my right side to get rid of the lip, so I turn and chat to Michaela some more.

At 5, the doctor comes back and does another check. I’m fully dilated and at a -1 station. I can try pushing now, or give it a bit of time to move down naturally.

I had stopped topping up the epidural after the 9cm cervical check, but I was still pretty numb. I decide to give it a bit more time to move down naturally so that the epidural has a bit more time to wear off and I can feel when to push. We have a chat with the doctor about what to expect. Basically, pediatrics will be in room in case the baby has breathed in any of the poo, and they will suction him after his head comes out to try to prevent that. If all is good, he’ll go right on my chest. If he needs help, he’ll go to pediatrics. This all sounds perfect to me and completely why I choose BC Womens. I want the best care for me and Sprocket if we need it.

At 5:30, the doctor comes back. Baby is at 0, and I can push whenever I want. This is good timing because I am starting to feel things and the things I am feeling do not feel nice.

The doctor asks me to give a little test push. I am a first time mom, and they’re expecting it to take a few hours.

I give a little push. “Whoa… I am going to page pediatrics now”. Apparently I am an Olympic all-star pusher. Everyone has a talent, and pushing out babies appears to be mine.

We try a few pushing positions, and the position that seem to work for both baby and me is the bed pretty far up, legs braced on squat bar, with a towel to pull on as I bear down. I can feel the contractions now, and they hurt, but it feels SO GOOD to push. I aim to push 3x per contraction for a count of 10. This isn’t anything I was instructed to do, but just what felt right to me. I like things to be orderly, and it was easier for me to get through when I set a pace like that. I am pretty much completely silent. I thought maybe that I only thought I was silent but that I was making noise. I asked Mike later and he confirmed that other than asking for my towel back (they took it away during one of the position changes), I was completely quiet.

Shortly after 6, his head emerges. They tell me to stop pushing and suction him. I start pushing again and the rest of him comes out and he takes a huge breath and lets out a lovely healthy cry. It’s 6:12am on December 9, and my son is born. He’s put immediately on my chest, and he is perfect. Pink and healthy and all of his fingers and toes and a perfect little face and I am immediately IN LOVE with this little person. I know by the records that he spent about an hour on my chest and that somewhere in there they got me to deliver the placenta and stitched up my tear and walked Mike through cutting the cord and all of the other baby stuff that happens, but honestly… it felt like about 5 minutes. His APGARs were 9 and 9, but I don’t remember them assessing that because I was way too busy enjoying every second of my baby. All I can remember is his eyes staring up at me and rubbing him and touching him and telling him how glad I was that he was finally here and nursing him and touching him and just being so amazed that Mike and I created this amazing and perfect human. The rest is just a huge blur of other people doing other stuff.

Pediatrics asks if they can take him, and I ask for a few more minutes. They give me another 15 or so, then ask again, and I consent. Derek is large – 9 lbs and 22 inches long – but perfect. They ask about vitamin K and eye drops and the other routine newborn stuff. I say a lot of “I know what that is and I am happy for him to have that”. Suddenly everyone is gone and it’s just me and Mike and our new little guy. It’s Michaela’s shift change. She congratulates us and leaves, and a new nurse brings me toast and tea. It’s pretty much the most amazing thing I’ve ever eaten and it’s the most amazing day of my life. Everything that day was just amazing, and I wouldn’t change a minute of it.

Today started with a bunch of housewifey stuff (get chili in crockpot, tidy house, start laundry, clean bathroom). Then there was mom stuff (pack gym bag, pack diaper bag, load all of it, plus stroller, plus baby in van). Work out at gym – run only since I needed to save time to shower after workout as we were going to meet Aidan. I didn’t want Aidan to be all like “Dude, you are stinking up my neighborhood”. Realize post shower that I forgot hairbrush. Fingercomb and blow dry bangs, then throw the back in a certifiably messy ponytail. Aidan is kind enough not to notice/comment. She also makes good grilled cheese sandwiches and agrees that grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup are a legally married food couple and that grilled cheese should never cheat with other soup flavours. I like Aidan.

Post lunch, we head to the baby group in her area for a super dumbed down, overly understanding nurse-led discussion about introducing solids. Resisted temptation to ask about serving babies ground up Happy Meals. They provided a few samples of home made baby food and the equivalent jarred stuff. The jarred stuff is horrible.

Completely unpalatable. Reaffirmed my decision to make my own baby food (ie: grind up what we’re already having for dinner), but I did learn a fair bit about what to introduce first (iron-rich foods). Aidan and I part listen, part make jokes about introducing tequila as a first food, and part watch our babies being super cute.

Baby Derek and Baby Matthew have finally realized the other baby exists. They are either in deep baby love or have become BFF. I’m fine with either and so is Aidan. Lots of staring deep into each others eyes and chewing on each others hands. Super cute.

Our original plan was to walk around Steveston, but the rain was like “HI I AM HERE TO RUIN ALL PLANS” so we walked around the mall for a while. Bought some hand soap for the bathroom and kitchen and a superman onesie. Excellent buys. Home for dinner and baby bed time (aside: tonight is the second night he’s sleeping in a sleep sack instead of swaddled. He was a rock star last night. Fingers crossed that today is more of the same!)

I have to say, I am really enjoying these baby dates with Aidan. A total highlight of my week.

Derek’s cold is all gone, so I decided it was time to go swimming! I don’t have a watersafe camera, so the above picture is the only one I got of him.

I’m pretty sure he just though it was a giant bathtub or something. I mean, I used to take him in the bath with me when he was colicky, so hanging out in water with mommy was no big deal.

First we did some songs. Think like “Babies in the Pool” to the tune of “Wheels on the Bus”. Those crazy pool babies. They go back and forth, up and down, splash splash splash. And he splashed with all the splashy splashing energy a baby could muster. A born pool natural.

We also did some back floating. Nailed it. Future Michael Phelps here folks, with the floating and the kicking and the generally having a great time in the water.

After that we tried some bubble blowing. I’d put my face in the water and blow bubbles. Then he’d put his face in and gulp back pool water. Then a few minutes later, throw up. Michael Phelps here, folks. Michael Phelps.

Today was a super chill day in the Magoo house. Mike was awesome and got up with Mr. 6am wake up call, and I stayed in bed until 8:30am. SUCH LUXURY! It probably sounds like that was sarcastic, but it isn’t. Staying in bed until 8:30 is a huge treat for me, and I enjoyed every second of it. Once I was up, Mike went back to bed to catch up on a few more Zs while Derek and I had couch cuddles and I had my breakfast. Mike got up for realz a little while later, and I went to the gym and ran my little heart out.

Showers for both of us when I got back, then BBQ’d hamburgers for lunch. It was a beautiful day – warm, but a bit overcast so you didn’t have to worry TOO much about sunburn. We brought Baby D’s little chair out so he could enjoy the day too.

Eating a hippopotamus. No big deal.

What are these cloth things on my body. I do not understand..

I was thinking about this yesterday – I miss having a pretty faithful documentation of my life. I mean, a lot of what I wrote about in Europe was “oh hey I saw the Eiffel Tower”, which is cool, but my favorite posts are the ones where I posted silly pictures of Mike and me and our friends doing things. So I’m going to try to get back into the habit of A) Taking Pictures of Stuff and B) Blogging about it.

I’ve failed pretty epically at A the past week, so instead we’ll focus on B.

I think I mentioned we got a BBQ about a month ago. It has been good because it means we can pick up some meat and buns and have people over and feed them and then watch things (hockey and UFC) on the big TV. This is what we have done the past two Saturdays, and it has been a lot of fun. We really do have awesome friends to make the trek over here so that we can have social time. It means a lot to us!

So last Saturday – BBQ. Last Sunday is kind of a blur. I mean, I know I must have done things because it’s Sunday, but for the life of me, I can’t remember what. I do remember that both Derek and I had horrible colds, so I imagine it was a lot of dealing with adult boogers and baby boogers. People really shouldn’t be allowed to get colds until they can blow their own noses. The super suck about our colds is that I won’t (and probably can’t, actually) take him to the gym childcare while he’s sick. It’s not nice for him because he’s siiick and wants his mommmmmy, and it’s not nice for all the other kids in childcare (and their parents) to share our germs. So no gym this week. Monday was a lot more of the boogers. Tuesday, we were starting to feel better, so we did a pretty epic walk to get groceries and see stuff.

On Wednesday, Aidan and Matthew came over (I pre-warned her about the boogers and gave her the option to opt out if she was concerned). We did library story/song hour at the library near our house, rented a movie, then came back to our place for lunch (beef dips) and cuddling napping babies while watching said movie. Then we let the babies play with the multitude of plastic crap in the living room while we played Mario Party. Exceptional Parenting, most assuredly.

Thursday was Derek’s 4 month vaccinations, and I got my tdap booster at the same time. After his 2 month vaccines, D was mostly just sleepy, so I figured it would be the same this time around and planned a bunch of errands so he could nap in the van. First up, Walmart for some household stuff. He slept the whole Walmart trip. When we came out, I noticed that one of my signal lights was burnt out, and decided it was a good time to get the oil changed as well, so I got that arranged (apparently the rain caused a short in the light – we need to go back and get it fixed this week). This is about the time that Derek decided that A) HIS LEG HURT B)HE’S NOT THAT SLEEPY and C) CAR SEATS ARE STUPID. We were closer to Mike’s Mom’s than home, so we went there and had a cuddle on the couch and I enjoyed some terrible trashy television. Mike and I don’t really watch enough TV to justify the expense of cable, so it was a real treat to have terrible daytime TV. Maury was disappointingly NOT about paternity testing, so I learned from Dr.Oz about all of the medications that could be making me fat (answer, since I really don’t take anything, none. Apparently I am fat due to poor lifestyle choices, which sucks because I was really wanting to blame my multivitamin). Friday was more of Keeping Baby Happy After Vaccines, and now we’re back to Saturday which was more BBQ and friends and fun.

Also, this happened:

This picture pretty much sums up the whole reason I had a kid.
