Okay, so for the longest time, Baby Derek was the worst possible sleeper. When he was a newborn, I’d read these bits about how you should wake your newborn up to eat if he sleeps longer than 3 hours, and I would LAUGH MANICALLY at the thought because seriously, that kid barely slept longer than 1.5 hours and that meant I was sleeping in one hour spurts and I was starting to lose my mind.

And then from 1-3 months he settled into waking up every 4 hours, and that was manageable, but I still had a lot of naps. Because dear God I was still tired and who were these babies that slept through the night at 12 weeks and maybe I should teach baby Derek how to read now so he could read these web sites and learn what the holy heck he was supposed to do.

Around 4 months, he conceded to sleep from 11pm to 5 or 6 am. Sweet Bliss. However, he still wasn’t napping well at all. 4-6 45 minute naps during the day. Barely enough time to shower before he was up again with the screaming and having needs. Adorable, adorable needs.

I guess he figured out reading shortly before his 6 month birthday, because he just randomly decided “Oh yeah, sleep, that’s pretty neat. I’ll have a 1.5 hour nap in the morning and a 1.5 hour nap in the afternoon, and then I’ll sleep from 7:30pm to 6:30am. Is that cool with you guys”

YES, BABY DEREK! IT IS COOL!

Only now, I have to put my money where my mouth is and start tackling my weight again (I told myself I could have a free pass to be mindful of food, but not worry about weight until he was sleeping through the night). I signed up for the YMCA a month and a half ago, and was going about twice a week, but the childminding they have just barely surrounds baby Derek’s morning nap. I will be fat forever before I forfeit all of this lovely, lovely sleep, so I’m going to cancel my membership and figure something else out. I think I’ll probably start by focusing on diet and turn the space between morning nap and lunch from “play with blocks on the floor” time to “go for a nice walk time”.

I’m not really sure how I should track this. Written blogs? Videos? How often should I update on this stuff? Weekly? Monthly? I don’t know, so I guess I’m asking you guys. How often and in how much detail do you guys want to hear about weight loss garbage?

I’m glad he’s finally sleeping for you. It makes life so much easier.

You could do a weekly blog on a Monday? You’ll have do try some workout videos while he’s sleeping or try running in the evening once he’s down for the night.

Do some reading on Intermittent Fasting (It’s not as eating disordery as it sounds…)

I would laugh at you because Claire slept for six hours the night she came home from the hospital and things just went uphill from there, but for the first six months Logan had colic and reflux and congestion and a million other things that caused him to be wide awake and screaming between the hours of 8pm and 4am. We eventually had to declare a house rule: Babies that don’t sleep are babies that don’t eat, get diaper changes, snuggles or bath time. Cleared that right up.

I agree with Katy, picking a day every week (Weightloss Wednesday? Alliterations are fun!) to blog would be fun.
