The Hunger Games

Katy recommended this book to me, and I was a little apprehensive at first because it’s Sci Fi, which usually isn’t my thing, but I went for it, and I am so glad I did. I could not put this book down.

The Hunger Games
is a novel set in the future. Something bad has happened to the world, and most of the people in it are separated into districts, with an upper class residing in an opulent, frivilous, and wasteful capital. The protagonist, Katkiss, lives in District 12 with her mother and sister. Mining is the main industry of District 12, and her father was killed in a mining explosion years prior. Since then, she has taken on a lot of responsibility for feeding and protecting her family.

Once per year, one girl and one boy from each District are drawn from a pool to compete in the Hunger Games, which is basically a big fight to the death that is broadcast everywhere. Of course, Katniss is drawn.

Much of it is kind of predictable. I mean, it’s the first in a trilogy, and the subsequent books would be pretty meh if the protagonist died in the first one. Also, there are bit in there that definitely pin it as teen fiction -  Plain Jane tomboy type gets a MAKEOVER and becomes the TOAST OF THE TOWN – but there is also at lot of darker stuff in there that I wasn’t expecting, including a pretty horrifying little twist at the end that is the stuff of nightmares.

I am probably hoping for too much here, but I would LOVE it if this series got picked up for a movie and was the new Twilight. Unlike Twilight, the protagonist is a strong and multi-dimensional character and I found myself unable to put it down. I am now working on the second book of the series and will post a review when I’m done that.

Also – Dear Hollywood, this would make an amazing movie. JUST SAYING!!!

I haven’t read these yet and I keep meaning to. Cassidy LOVES to read. Most parents ground their kids from TV, we have to ground our’s from reading. NO JOKE! But I want to read the first one before giving it to her so that we can discuss it while she’s reading. I have one book in line before it then it’s on!

Such an action-oriented book. It’s going to be awesome on the big screen. It’s also short enough that they won’t have to cut out IMPORTANT THINGS, which I think is awesome.

I have said it before, and I’ll say it again – I LOVE the relationship you have with Cassidy. I hope to have a similar relationship with any future kids I have.

I thought you were talking about our flat and the diet wars. HA!

I loved the first 2 books, but I thought the 3rd sucked. I started skipping pages as I went along and then finally just stopped reading it.

I’ve heard mixed reviews on these books. Some people love ‘em, some people were less than enthusiastic. I may have to read just to have my own opinion!
